Umwelt Manifest

Joseph Drori Doria does an amazing job with this abstract painting series  dubbed, Umwelt. The way he builds these paintings is with a single concept, and then that idea expands across the board, almost like a virus. I love the rich dark colors he incorporates into these images, Joseph say his recent work has been focused on a “Future” theme. The first and last images has more of a galaxy feel to the composition, just building on what he said. The beauty of destruction is what makes these paintings so elegant and hard to read, which such an abstract piece, it’s really difficult to feel the emotion that goes into this piece. He goes on to say “Through my Art I wish to serve an access to an ambiguous and dynamic line between self and ‘other’, between certain and unknown, between the human and it self, carving the possibility for a new perspective.” Be sure to check out more of Joseph’s work after the jump.

Joseph is also on Tumblr.

New York City means much to Yalies. Many alumni have made their mark on the city, including artist Leo Villareal ‘90, whose BUCKYBALL (2012), with nested geodesic sculptural spheres made of 180 LED tubes, is on view in Madison Square Park through Feb. 15.

A chandelier made from petri dishes that actually grows bacteria…

Bacterioptica breaks from design norms, a light fixture outfitted with petri dishes. Designed to be adaptive, not only in its form and mechanics, but more importantly, in the way it evolves. Bacterioptica is not your typical chandelier, just as no family is a typical unit of interactions. Its on/off switch does not control it. Bacterioptica is alive. It grows. It is itself a household organism. It is living and breathing the same air and bacteria we are.
